ITN to expand newsgathering resources with SNG fly-away

U.K. television news supplier ITN will acquire the Norsat NewsLink to enable live broadcasts of breaking news stories from around the world.

The NewsLink terminal, which will be delivered during the first quarter of 2005, also will be used to carry live exchanges between a nightly news anchor based in a news hot spot and the studio in London.

According to Malcolm Smith, ITN head of operational engineering, NewsLink was desirable because it is lightweight and can be checked on an airline. Other factors favoring the choice of NewsLink included quick setup time and broadcast quality performance.

The Norsat NewsLink terminal is optimized for satellite newsgathering operations and can be deployed on short notice.

ITN is the U.K.’s largest commercial television broadcaster and a preferred source of news for the flagship “London Tonight” news program.
