WHSV-TV offers SD/HD simulcast

WHSV-TV, the ABC affiliate in Harrisonburg, VA, has added several new Omneon HD modules to its Omneon Spectrum media server system, enabling the simulcast of ABC network content in both SD and HD. The new HD services are running alongside additional SD channels being launched from the station’s existing Omneon server platform. The station, which is owned by Gray Television in Atlanta, GA, will integrate the newly expanded Omneon server system with its Final Cut Pro editing systems.

In addition to launching the simulcast of its ABC network content, the station, which went live with its new HD service on Sept. 25, also added channels for the Fox and MyNetworkTV networks, as well as hub operations for a “ghost station” located in another market. The facility’s SD and HD Omneon server system, which operates under the control of Harris automation, replaced the facility’s tape-based system, providing a newer and more streamlined playout environment.

The Omneon Spectrum media server offers a scalable infrastructure for broadcast playout and storage applications. It’s built on an open architecture that supports a variety of third-party applications for control and transmission, media management, archiving and collaborative production. The Omneon system also allows stored media to be shared among many users and applications.
