WBAL-TV transitions local newscasts to HD

WBAL-TV, the Hearst-Argyle-owned NBC affiliate in Baltimore, launched local HD newscasts Jan. 3 after an extensive modernization and upgrade of its control room and news set.

Unlike many other Hearst-Argyle stations making the transition, WBAL bit off the whole HD project at once. Rather than taking a phased approach to the upgrade, the station replaced its news set, studio technology, control room and audio board all at the same time.

While WBAL director of engineering Jeff Halapin took a different approach to the project, he did benefit from the experience and advice of his peers in the broadcast group. This week, Halapin discusses the project.
