TANDBERG shows next-generation digital architecture

At IBC2008 (Stand 1.D61), TANDBERG Television is demonstrating headend and distribution technology for next-generation digital terrestrial television (DTT) — including an advanced architecture that harnesses the benefits of IP video from encoder to transmitter site.
The company said it will demonstrate the latest-generation MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 AVC encoding for SD and HD television, IP statistical multiplexing, and IP streaming as part of its iSIS 8000 IP headend solution for DTT. It will show how DVB-T, DVB-T2 and DVB-H video streams can be processed in the same headend and highlight the efficiencies of using IP transport for all current and future over-the-air broadcast services.
TANDBERG said video compression will play a central role in next-generation DTT, enabling broadcasters to expand SD services and introduce HD in a bandwidth-constrained environment.
For headend monitoring, particularly of advanced codecs, TANDBERG’s RX1290 receiver/decoder decodes MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 in SD and HD. It can also downconvert HD to SD and combines IP/ASI inputs with SDI/ASI output. At the transmitter site, the TT1260 IRDs (integrated receiver decoders) provide the IP-to-ASI/SDI output for the transmitters, protecting SFN-enabled transports.
The nCompass Monitoring management system was developed for operators to unify distributed TV infrastructures and is suited to the terrestrial television market where it provides remote monitoring of headends to distributed transmitter sites.
