LCD TV makers to target faster refresh rates for better performance
During the next four years, shipments of televisions using 100Hz-120Hz and faster refresh rates will rise from negligible levels to nearly 90 million, according to research firm iSuppli.
Speaking May 19 at the 2008 Society for Information Display (SID) International Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition in Los Angeles, iSuppli VP of displays Paul Semenza forecasted that 120Hz refresh technology would be found in 46.2 percent of LCD TVs shipped in 2012, up from 2.9 percent in 2007.
According to Semenza, 120Hz refresh, full HD resolution and 40in and larger screen sizes will gain popularity throughout the next few years as consumers adopt sets with higher image quality.
Consumers are demanding improvements in LCD picture quality, he said, referring to new iSuppli ConsumerTrak service figures indicating that 34.1 percent of U.S. consumers in the first quarter cited picture quality as their main factor for buying a flat-panel television.
Along with faster refresh rates, LCD TV makers are increasing their adoption of 1080p resolution and are moving to larger display sizes. Semenza predicted that 1080p HDTV penetration of global LCD TV sales will rise to 47 percent in 2012, up from 10.2 percent in 2007. He added that sets 40in and larger will account for nearly half of LCD TV shipments in 2012, at 49.1 percent, up from 24.3 percent in 2007.
