HDTV owners report satisfaction with sets, J.D. Power and Associates says

A new study from J.D. Power and Associates has found that the vast majority of HDTV owners are satisfied with their sets, and about a quarter of them plan to buy another within the next year.

The research, the inaugural J.D. Power and Associates “2007 Large Screen HDTV Usage and Satisfaction Study” released last week, measured customer satisfaction by examining four key factors: picture and sound performance; ease of operation; features; and appearance and styling. HDTVs were evaluated in three segments —37in to 49in, 50in to 65in and rear-projection HDTVs.

The number of owners who say they would repurchase the same brand averages 91 percent in the 37in to 49in segment and 92 percent in the 50in to 65in and rear-projection segments. In addition, HDTV owners are also extremely likely to recommend their HDTV brand to others, with recommendation intent levels averaging above 90 percent in all three segments.

Owners report paying an average of $1700 for a 37in to 49in model, $2700 for a 50in to 65in model, and $2200 for a rear-projection model. Despite these relatively high prices, 23 percent of current HDTV owners report they may be in the market for an additional HDTV within the next year. Of these owners, 41 percent said they would purchase an LCD TV larger than 37in, 27 percent said they would purchase a plasma TV and 25 percent said they would purchase an LCD TV smaller than 37in.
