DisplaySearch white paper explores technology advances impacting plasma TVs

Advancements in making plasma panels more luminous per unit of power consumed will translate into a bright future for the technology, both figuratively and literally, according to a new white paper from display market consultancy DisplaySearch.
Co-authored by DisplaySearch founder and president Ross Young and director of FPD material and technology analyst YS Chung, the 25-page white paper, “The Future Still Looks Bright for Plasma TVs: Dramatic Cost Reductions and Significant Performance Improvements Lie Ahead,” examines several factors that promise to contribute to the technology’s success, including motion performance, cost advantages and luminous efficacy.
The paper points out that plasma panel luminous efficacy, which is defined as the relationship between brightness and power consumption, today stands at between 2.0-2.5 lumens per watt. It illustrates the impact 5 lumens per watt and 10 lumens per watt would have on the price of components necessary to build a plasma display, the impact on panel costs and a time by which it forecasts the price declines to be realized.
Sales of plasma HDTVs rose 33 percent in the third quarter, a recent DisplaySearch report found. That report credits increased availability of 1080p plasma models and the fact that many plasma HDTVs are priced 20 percent lower than similarly-sized LCD models.
