FCC Nominees’ Confirmation Hearings Scheduled

WASHINGTON: The two remaining nominees to the Federal Communications Commission will be vetted by the Senate Commerce Committee next week. Mignon Clyburn and Meredith Attwell Baker will face the committee next Wednesday, July 15, at 2:30 p.m. Eastern.

Clyburn, a Democrat, is the daughter of House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) She served for six years on the South Carolina Public Service Commission, and later she chaired the Washington Action Committee of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners. She previously was publisher and general manager a weekly newspaper in Charleston, S.C. Clyburn graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science degree in banking, finance and economics in 1984.

Baker would be the second Republican on the commission. She was most recently acting assistant secretary of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, where she oversaw the fed’s DTV converter coupon program. She was previously vice president at Williams Mullen Strategies, and before that, senior counsel for Covad Communications. Baker worked at the U.S. Court of Appeals Fifth Circuit in Houston and later at DeLange and Hudspeth, L.L.P. She also worked in State Department. Attwell Baker holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Washington & Lee University in 1990 and a law degree from the University of Houston in 1994. She is a member of the Texas State Bar.
