WXYZ First In Michigan to Broadcast News In HD

WXYZ-TV/Channel 7 is proud to announce that it is Michigan’s first television station to broadcast its local news in High Definition. With HD, viewers see a high resolution broadcast with a notably sharper, crisper and clearer picture and enhanced audio, regardless of what type of television (HD or standard) they watch.

“This is a watershed moment in Detroit TV,” said WXYZ-TV/Channel 7 Vice-President & General Manager Grace Gilchrist. “It reinforces our tradition of leadership, innovation and excellence in broadcasting.”

Currently, WXYZ-TV/Channel 7 broadcasts 31 hours of Action News weekly, now available in High Definition. Viewers with HDTV sets will see the newscast in a 16:9 wide-screen format and will enjoy a distinctly better picture. While viewers with standard TV setups won’t receive the HD signal, they will notice an improved picture.

WXYZ’s Chief Engineer Ray Thurber states, “Viewers will experience a dramatic shift. The picture is spectacular and the sound is better. We are also growing our use of native 16:9 pictures from the field.” Thurber further states, “WXYZ has made a real commitment to stay true to the format. We didn’t want to stretch anything.”

WXYZ-TV/Channel 7 is the ABC affiliate serving metropolitan Detroit and most of ABCs prime time programming is presented in High Definition. WXYZ-TV/Channel 7 is the only station in the Detroit television market to broadcast its news in HD, and only one of a handful—about 15—nationwide.
