Sony Electronics’ Professional Media Group is conducting a second session in its series of online seminars on high-definition recording media and formats.
These web-based courses, designed for PC users, are available at no charge. They will begin in January and again be led by Wayne Desmond, Sony’s national training manager for its Media & Applications Solutions Division. Targeted toward cinematographers, directors, directors of photography, editors and other content creators working in TV and motion picture production, the seminars are designed to raise awareness of media technology—including tape, disc and solid-state—and its role in enabling HD formats.
“The success of our first round of seminars and the valuable feedback from participants convinced us that production professionals are eager to learn more about the latest developments in professional media,” said Desmond. “We’ve revised and enhanced the modules for these new sessions, and we’re confident that attendees will find them to be a positive experience and a valuable professional resource.”
This second round of seminars will include in-depth extension on the sessions offered last year, including “Sony HD Media in Perspective” (Seminar 208) and “How to Protect Your Digital Assets” (Seminar 209).
Seminar One will include an overview of the different specifications and terminology used when referencing HD tape, optical and solid-state media—including Sony’s new SxS PRO solid-state memory card designed for use with Sony’s new XDCAM EX camcorder—as well as how media formulation and manufacturing impact the reliability of a format’s performance.
The second seminar continues the discussion on how to best protect digital assets. Desmond will present guidelines on the importance and basics of head and tape path cleaning; in-depth recommendations on near and long-term storage solutions; and options for content recovery, as well as real-life examples of Sony data recovery work.
