MLB Starts Streaming Live Games in Team’s Markets

NEW YORK: Major League Baseball will stream live coverage of games in the home markets of playing teams, it said this week. MLB will launch streaming packages of Yankees games starting in July, making it the first sports league to offer live, in-market, Web coverage of games that are also broadcast on local TV. The Yankees package will be limited to Cablevision, which covers Long Island and some of Manhattan and the surround area. Cablevision subscribers with expanded basic and broadband service will be able to stream Yankees games for $49.95 for the rest of the season, or $19.95 for 30 days starting July 8 at 8 p.m., EST.

Baseball’s is one of the more active sports leagues in the online space. MLB has been streaming out-of-market games live since 2003. Its Gameday service is feature rich with stats, graphics and 3D animations. A second in-market live game streaming offering is expected to be announced the week of June 29.
