All is not lost everywhere. A big Brit pay TV provider and a Colorado business process outsourcer each posted 1,000 new job openings this month. BSkyB, after having posted a 26 percent increase in operating profit for the six months ending Dec. 31, said it would create 1,000 new jobs.
“The company is predicted to benefit in the recession as customers stay at home and watch TV rather than eat out or go to the cinema,” Sky Newsreported. The satellite TV service provider added 171,000 new subscribers in 4Q08, exceeding analyst estimates of 134,000. It’s hiring up in anticipation of an uptick in orders for its HD service. It recently dropped the price on HD set-tops to take on competitors in the United Kingdom and across Europe.
TeleTech, an Englewood, Colo., company that provides front- and back-office service for other businesses, posted 1,000 jobs related to the DTV transition deadline. KVIA-TV, the ABC affiliate in El Paso Texas, reported that TeleTech was “searching for qualified individuals to assist the public with the transition,” whether or not the transition deadline was delayed to June 12 or kept at Feb. 17. TeleTech is offering $13 an hour for people to work from home answering calls about the transition for a week or two.
