Harris is introducing a new mobile TV standard, ATSC Mobile, which uses broadcasters' DTV signals to transmit audio video content to mobile devices.
At NAB2007, Harris Corporation is planning to reveal more information about its proposed standard—codenamed “Project Eagle”—including partnership announcements and a possible technology demonstration.
The ATSC Mobile standard transmits audio and video to mobile devices using broadcasters’ DTV signals, and is in direct competition with A-VSB, the standard being developed by Samsung and Rohde & Schwarz. A-VSB is also ATSC-based. The ATSC is considering standardizing A-VSB.
Harris claims that ATSC Mobile has about a 7 dB greater signal threshold in performance than that of A-VSB. The company says it has been conducting low power testing in an unspecified major city using a one-watt transmitter, and that they are soon to move to a major market with higher power for field trials.
