Denver Station Employs WiMAX to Move HD News

Denver ABC affiliate KMGH-TV transmitted HD news over WiMAX during the Democratic National Convention in that city, according to the service provider. WMX Systems of Denver issued a press release describing how KMGH used a wireless broadband connection to transmit news from an ENG truck back to the station at 1 Mbps.

WMX heralded the arrangement as a “first-time event” for the telecommunications industry, but stations around the country are experimenting with various forms of broadband for getting news files from the field to the station. Some have even transmitted news using Skype“s video service. The end results are the same, and stations save thousands of dollars on satellite time and microwave transmission.
