Broadcast Microwave Services Inc. has received a 2006 3G A-List Award for using CDMA2000/EV-DO to allow their high-speed microwave radios for mobile ENG units to provide a high-speed data link back to the studio without additional infrastructure. BMS' award for "Technical Innovation" was presented at the 4th annual CTIA Wireless IT and Entertainment 2006 in Los Angeles. The event honors outstanding wireless implementations based on third-generation CDMA standards that demonstrate creativity, innovation and successful enterprise. Qualcomm sponsored the awards.
The BMS TCII Media Router sends IP traffic over the forward microwave link with the return link being provided via EV-DO, allowing file transfers of up to 6 Mbps in the spare system capacity. While the microwave link is up, this file transfer takes place at high speed. If the microwave link goes down or the mobile news unit needs to drop its antenna to drive to another news site, the file transfer continues over the EV-DO connection.
"The use of EV-DO in our products allowed us to provide a more cost-effective solution for our customers without the need for additional return path infrastructure. We were amazed and honored to be recognized by Qualcomm," said Graham Bunney, president of BMS.
