Tandberg Television Launches Next-gen Universal EdgeQAM

Tandberg Television, part of the Ericsson Group, launched its EdgeQAM, the EQ8096 at The Cable Show in Las Vegas this week.

Designed to speed deployment of advanced video and data services for cable operators, the next generation EQ8096 is a step-change in QAM devices and offers density with up to 96 QAMs in a single 2 RU chassis, simultaneous support of HD and SD streams, low power consumption. The unit uses less than 350 watts of power to deliver this advanced functionality and provides very high reliability through designed-in features like internal module switching/redundancy and internal stream replication. It has the ability to operate in switched digital video, VOD, broadcast, and high-speed data applications simultaneously within the same chassis.

This new device is based on open standards and uses Tandberg Television's advanced RF modulation techniques. These technologies allow support for CableLabs DOCSIS 3.0 DRFI and M-CMTS specifications, enabling the EQ8096 to operate in DVB-C/HFC networks today and migrate seamlessly to tomorrow's IP platforms.

"Cable operators are moving fast to enhance the television entertainment experience for subscribers through expanded service offerings such as high-definition content via Switched Digital Video, video-on-demand and high-speed data. With more channels and next generation services, cable operators need to maximize their HFC bandwidth utilization while still offering existing VOD and broadcast services to their customers," said Braxton Jarratt, senior vice president of Marketing and Business Development, Tandberg Television Inc.
