Motorola Inc. has announced the debut of technology designed to bridge between MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 delivery networks. The company’s new DSR-6000 series of receiver-transcoders make it possible for distribution networks to use both MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 AVC compression technologies.
The new product line is expected to make program delivery significantly more effective for content providers and system operators by adding MPEG-4 as a delivery option. This, along with more efficient modulation technology can reduce satellite transponder requirements by as much as 75 percent, according to Motorola.
“The introduction of the Motorola DSR-6000 family of receiver-transcoders extends our video network delivery leadership by allowing both MPEG-4 and MPEG-2 compression technologies to work within the same network,” said Doug Means, corporate vice president and general manager of Motorola’s IP Video Solutions Group.” We see strong demand from our customers and anticipate that this innovative series of products will accelerate the adoption of HD programming.”
The new devices are expected to further the spread standard-definition, as well as HD, content, by freeing up space on delivery channels. The DSR-6000 line is designed to convert received content into MPEG-2 for system operators that use MPEG-2 set-top boxes, allowing content providers to distribute solely in MPEG-4.
