Fathers Day: Wal-Mart offers Blu-ray Player Under $130

As Father’s Day approaches this Sunday, June 21, suddenly panicked gift-givers can count on retailers to try to make their task a bit easier, albeit at a price, of course. Wal-Mart, notably, this week is offering a Magnavox Blu-ray Disc player for a under $130 in a promotion that runs only through June 20.

The price alone is hardly a shocker, considering the source, but the fact that it’s a brand name points to a slightly revised direction for the world’s largest retailer. In recent months, Wal-Mart has been busy upscaling its electronics department at many of its 3,500 outlets to offer more brand-name CE appliances at lower prices to compete for the electronics consumer dollar in America with chief CE rival Best Buy, among others.

Several tech Web sites, while not yet able to attest to the overall quality of the cost-effective Magnavox player (NB500MGX) see both the price points — and the fact that it’s Wal-Mart — as sure signs that Blu-ray may be fast-becoming a mainstream product in North America.

Wal-Mart’s week-long lower prices also pertain to most of its catalog of Blu-ray movie titles.

Meanwhile, Best Buy this week was offering some Blu-ray titles for $10.
