WSB Deploys T-VIPS Video-over-IP Solution for HD Backhaul
WSB, the Cox Communications station in Atlanta, has started using the TVG-420 solution, from Greenwich, Conn.-based T-VIPS, for live remote compressed HD feeds over IP using microwave links from ENG relay stations back to the studio.

“The T-VIPS TVG-420 solution provides exceptional reliability through its forward error correction module, an absolute requirement when we put remote news locations live on-air,” said WSB Chief Engineer Gary Alexander.

According to Alexander, the broadcast-quality compressed HD signal (about 20Mbps, wrapped in ASI), is supplied to the TVG-420, then IP-encapsulated with highly robust error correction and supplied to the microwave radio input for line-of-sight transmission to the WSB studio complex. There it is de-encapsulated to ASI by the receiver-side T-VIPS TVG-420 and externally decoded to HD-SDI for news master control switching.

“This WSB-TV contract validates our message that TV broadcasters are transitioning to video-over-IP technology at an increasing pace,” said T-VIPS America Director of Sales Steve Sloane. “I am very pleased that our TVG-420 link solution has been selected by this Cox flagship station, a TV station with a proud heritage of technological innovation.”
