Time Warner Cable is engaged in field trials using Scientific-Atlanta's new Explorer 8000 set-top box, which allows participants to pause live TV and record programming. According to the companies, the Explorer 8000 is the first set-top box to include DVR on a complete home entertainment platform for cable.

The Explorer 8000 home entertainment server is designed to offer next-generation TV services. Consumers can use it to pause live TV, record one channel while watching another, record two channels and play back one channel simultaneously and watch picture-in-picture on any television set. It features an 80 GB hard drive capable of recording 50 hours of programming without a phone line and can support a range of interactive and on-demand services.
