Tandberg HD Encoder Deployed for Digital Dailies
Cohen Communications and Heuris have co-developed a rentable HD MPEG encoding playback system for digital daily viewing, using the E5821 HD encoder from Tandberg Television, a provider of digital broadcasting equipment.

The encoding system consists of a Tandberg Television E5821 HD encoder and MediaSonic ASI capture station, while the playback system includes a MediaSonic HD player, USB 2.0 drives and a JVC HD projector or Panasonic plasma screen. An HD master is created after the original film negative is transferred to tape. The HD signal with audio is fed into the Tandberg encoder, which feeds the MediaSonic ASI Capture Station.

“The Tandberg television encoders … provide HD/SD signal flexibility, which is unique among HD encoders,” said Stevan B. Cohen, president of Cohen Communications. “They accept audio as an embedded HD SDI stream and will also accept external audio as AES or an AC3 bit stream.”

Cohen’s HD encoding and playback packages are geared to the Hollywood production and post production community for the immediate viewing of feature film dailies in HDTV projection. The system was used in several films to be released in 2003, including DreamWorks’ “Biker Boys” and MGM Studios’ “Bulletproof Monk.”
