Matrox Axio LE and Matrox Developer Products Are Integral Components of Full-Digital Broadcast Installation at South Korea-based OBS Kyung-in TV

Montreal, Canada, April 14, 2008 - Matrox® Video Products Group today announced that OBS Kyung-in TV, a newly established terrestrial broadcasting company in South Korea, has chosen Matrox-based HD content creation and delivery systems for its 100% tapeless environment. OBS has recently begun transmitting full HD video signals for news, drama, sports, and entertainment programs produced by its fully networked digital production and playout system which it calls NBS (Networked Broadcast System). IBM Korea was a main contractor, providing the industry-standard IBM software, hardware, and business/technology services that enables the facility to be fully networked. Key components of the NBS include 30 Matrox Axio LE realtime HD editing systems as well as 10 Matrox-based ingest servers from D2net and 20 Matrox-based VisualCG systems from Visual Research Inc. Other broadcast equipment vendors collaborated and customized their solutions to meet OBS requirements including Sony, Quantel, and Omneon.

In the OBS facility, all program materials are ingested to large-scale centralized storage by D2net servers which are based on the Matrox X.mio platform. Assets are accessed through the network by the Matrox Axio editing systems for finishing. Programs are exported as Panasonic P2HD or Sony XDCAM HD MXF files for the Omneon and Quantel playout servers.

"To enable this workflow, we adopted an IBM SOA (Services Oriented Architecture) solution called "Media Hub" which interconnects post production processes through a web services interface," said Y.D. Jo, technical director of OBS. "We chose Matrox Axio as our NLE because it supports multi-format, realtime native MXF editing and it features a flexible and scalable open architecture. It is not a proprietary system so it is easy to integrate with third-party video servers and IT systems. It matches the OBS - Open Broadcast System - philosophy."

"As the first full HD terrestrial TV broadcasting company in South Korea, OBS looked for better ways to build an open, flexible, and high-performance broadcast infrastructure for HD program production and playout. They were determined to employ the most advanced digital technologies instead of relying on traditional tape-based broadcast operations," said J.D. Bae, IBM system integrator. "The Matrox video solutions were the right choice for digital content creation, archiving, and distribution."

"OBS is realizing the benefits of fast, streamlined, file-based workflow with the elimination of repetitive tasks," said Dong Kook Shin, president of D2net. "Faster access to media assets lets them more easily repurpose material and increases productivity so they can quickly respond to the ever-changing business environment and customer needs."

Matrox Axio LE and the Matrox Developer Products will be demonstrated at NAB 2008 in booth SL320.
