'Under the top' offering to expand pay-TV revenue mix

Internet TV has caught the imagination of consumers. Some may be wishing to shed their subscriptions to traditional pay-TV services; others may like the ability to choose content a la carte; and still others may like the convenience of watching a movie or TV show without the need to rent and return a DVD.

While industry research firms report no mass loss of so-called “cord cutters” from pay-TV providers, the meteoric rise in the stock price of Netflix since January 2010 may signal that an exodus is on the horizon.

Regardless of whether that happens, over-the-top (OTT) video has the attention of traditional pay-TV providers, and one company in particular is rolling out a service that will allow them to tap into the appeal of Web video while increasing their subscription revenue.

Concurrent has announced the launch of i2TV, a cloud-hosted storage and content management system that will enable a service-provider-owned business to offer subscribers a convenient way to load video from their mobile phones into the cloud to make that content available to family and friends.

In this podcast interview, Concurrent vice president of video solutions Jim Brickmeier discusses i2TV, a service he says is better described as “under the top.”
