Report: IPTV subscriptions to exceed 50 million in 2010

A new report finds there will be a total of 8 million IPTV subscribers worldwide this year, and the total will hit 50.5 million in 2010.

The Multimedia Research Group (MRG) “IPTV Global Forecast: 2006 to 2010 - October 2006” report finds that telcos are largely responsible for growth in Europe and Asia, while small independent IPTV providers are driving much of the growth in North America.

IPTV director for MRG Bob Larribeau identified one group of IPTV service providers as the sole sector not experiencing growth: those that have chosen Microsoft software. Deployments at AT&T, Bell Canada, Deutsche Telekom and Swisscom are on hold waiting for Microsoft’s software,” he said.

Microsoft’s slowness to market has negatively affected the forecast for North America in particular, which has not been offset by the stronger growth of small independent operators and of Verizon’s (IPTV-based) VOD services.

The report forecasts 50.5 million IPTV subscribers by the end of 2010 with global IPTV revenue of $16.7 billion in 2010 —$12.8 billion in service revenue and $3.9 billion in system and software revenue.
