February DTV Sales Up 83 Percent
The Consumer Electronics Association recently publicized results of the national February 2002 sales of DTV products and revised its number for 2001 totals after previously reported sales figures were changed.

In February, DTV product sales climbed 83 percent over February 2001 to 133,764 units, worth $242 million. The combined sales for January and February are 283,055 units, which is more than the entire first quarter of 2001. The CEA attributes the increase to the rising number of HDTV programming available, including the Winter Olympics, the NCAA basketball tournament and content on HDNet. Sears promoted retail sales of DTV equipment in conjunction with CBS' broadcast of the NCAA tournament.

The new 2001 figures show that 128,845 set-top boxes and 70,295 integrated sets were sold. Total DTV products sold reached 1,459,731 units worth $2.6 billion. The CEA projects that 2.1 million DTV products will be sold this year and estimates four million units in 2003.
