SMPTE conference examines digital audio

The SMPTE Technical Conference and Exhibition is scheduled for Nov. 9 – Nov. 12, at the Hilton Exhibition Hall in New York City. More than 50 exhibitors will show the latest in video, audio, and motion picture products and technologies.
In addition to the exhibition, SMPTE’s Technical Conference will focus on the latest developments affecting HD, broadcasting, storage, compression and networking technologies, with a series of educational sessions.
On Friday, Nov. 11, a morning seminar entitled "Sound in the Digital Era," will be chaired by Tomlinson Holman. The seminar will be a series of presentations examining digital audio workflow and the sound signal chain. Questions to be answered include:
Should production sound be compressed so that it sounds good on an Avid? Should editors perform equalization? What are the criteria for fully reproducing the recorded sound in theaters and homes?
Presentations will include:
"The X-Curve, its origins and history," by Loan Allen, of Dolby Laboratories. "Cinema Sound Quality Redux," by Tomlinson Holman, of USCA Schools of Cinema/Television Engineering. "DC-PCM, an Audio Packaging Proposal for D-Cinema," with Stan Cossette and Pierre Lemieux of Dolby Laboratories. "Dolby Metadata Woes? Standardization to the rescue!" by Orest Holyk of Evertz Microsystems. "Managing Multi-Channel Audio in Master Control," presented by Birney Dayton of Nvision. "Dynamic Range Realities for Digital Television Audio," with Tim Carroll of Linear Acoustic.
