5.1 first in Russia

Russian NTV-Plus television has begun broadcasting selected content in Dolby Digital 5.1.

NTV-Plus subscribers can now enjoy a multichannel surround sound experience free of any noise or distortion.

The digital broadcast format provides six digital surround sound channels transmitted by the Dolby surround standard. Currently no other Russian broadcasters are on air with Dolby Digital 5.1. In Europe, digital broadcasting with Dolby Digital 5.1 is offered by major satellite broadcasters such as Premiere (Germany), British Sky Broadcasting (England), and Canal+ (France).

Industry watchers see this as the first step for Russian TV broadcasters toward adopting HDTV technology.
