YouTube Announces 1080p Support
SAN BRUNO, CALIF.:YouTube said it has grown its HD video
acceptability mode to 1080p this week from its current 720p level for
submissions.
“As resolution of consumer cameras increases, we want to make sure YouTube is
the best home on the web to showcase your content. For viewers with big
monitors and fast computer[s], try switching to 1080p to get the most out of
the full-screen experience,” YouTube’s Blog states, demonstrating the difference between 360p and
1080p with an ever close shot of a dog’s snout.
YouTube engineers have tested bandwidth and other technical parameters required
of 1080p and “are no longer worried about possible infrastructure problems or
cost issues that could come with the bigger 1080p files,” according to the Associated
Press.
Meanwhile, the YouTube Blog encourages its millions of users to “be creative
and choose subjects that really show off the beauty of your camera. We will run
the best examples on our home page in a future spotlight.”
Also, for those mostly amateur videographers who had already uploaded their
content in 1080p (even though 1080p capabilities were not yet feasible),
YouTube said it’s now in the process of re-encoding that material to stream
