Thinking in Pictures
Temple GrandinLONG BEACH, CALIF.: “My mind works like Google for images,” said Temple Grandin in her presentation for the TED conference in Long Beach last month. Grandin, a renowned veterinarian who became famous for her explanation of the experience of autism. Her life also was the subject of a recent HBO Film, about which she commented.

“There were a lot of kind of Asperger types and autism types working out there on the movie set, too,” she said. One of the things that really worries me is that, where are the younger version of those kids today? They’re not ending up in Silicon Valley where they belong.”

The crux of her talk at TED was about the value of various types of mind--word, image and pattern thinkers.

“The world is going to need all these different kinds of minds to work together,” she said.

When asked about a previous comment that without autistics, men would still be socializing by a fire in a cave.

“If you were to get rid of all of the autism genetics there’d be no more Silicon Valley and the energy crisis would not be solved,” she told an adoring audience.

Yes... All that live - die. But not every being is killed. Needlessly so, at that. We can thrive on a plant based diet. The slaughter of these innocent beings is absolutely without cause. What Grandin and her followers wish to do is embrace the idea that you can justify a wrong act if you do it the "right" way. The idea of using animals as commodities is an ancient conflict. One that, as we progress, will become more evident in its flawed precepts. If one truly desires to be compassionate they seek to eliminate suffering not to "reduce" it. These animals have an interest in their own lives equal to ours. To steal these lives without "need" qualifies as unjustly killing for pleasure. It is a moral dissonace that our society must recon with if we are ever to truly evolve. Finally, this "humane" myth that our culture is so enamoured by - Do we ever care to question the emotional and psychological toll it takes on these desperate workers who task at the kill floor? Charged with the job of snuffing the lives of thousands of innocent beings; These employees as expected, have high rates of depression, alcoholism, and drug abuse. Is it any wonder why our culture is the violent one it is? Our very sustenance is rooted in the exploitation of human and nonhuman alike. Please... If you want a better world - Eat like you mean it... Go Vegan
