An ad hoc group of broadcast stations said it has raised $1.25 million to help tornado victims in their area.
The tornado hit earlier this month, killing 22 people and causing damage in parts of Kentucky and Indiana.
"In rapid response, an alliance of Evansville area broadcasters came together on Wednesday, Nov. 9 to help raise more than $1,250,000 for the victims," organizers said in an announcement passed along to trade media by the NAB.
Broadcasters involved include public radio station WNIN, the stations of the South Central radio group and Insight Communications, and TV stations WFIE, WTVW and WAZE. They organized and promoted a telethon with proceeds going to the American Red Cross and The Salvation Army.
"Beginning with morning drive radio and television newscasts, and culminating with a two-hour live telethon simulcast over all the stations, Tri-State residents were blanketed with a common message, 'We are here to help our neighbors,'" the organizers stated.
"Co-hosted by news and weather anchors from WFIE and WTVW, along with radio personalities from 104.1 WIKY, Hot 96, WABX, 93.5 The Wolf and JACKFM, the telethon not only recognized corporate donations from Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Vectren, Deaconess Hospital, banks and others, but also showed an outpouring from local residents."
Monetary donations to the "Tri-State Tornado Relief" fund continue to be accepted.
