Members of the Senate debated Sen. Byron Dorgan's "Resolution of Disapproval" which would strike down all of the FCC's new media ownership rules. Senate Commerce Committee John McCain opposed the resolution, saying it was too sweeping.
"In short, if Congress is unsatisfied with the result of the FCC's review, it should step in to provide new direction. Simply saying, 'You got it wrong, try again' is not an appropriate response."
McCain urged his colleagues to pass S-1046, which is on the Senate calendar awaiting action. The measure would establish explicit, sustainable media ownership limits, while preserving new radio ownership rules tightened by the FCC in its June 2 order, said McCain.
Meanwhile, The White House threatened to veto Dorgan's resolution. The Office of Management and Budget stated the measure would negate nearly two years of the FCC's study of media ownership.
