S-A Combines High Definition With High Speed
Set-top giant Scientific-Atlanta says its latest home gateway can receive HDTV programming and work as a broadband modem too, adding up to "a powerful entertainment and information combination."
The Explorer 4200HD, scheduled to ship this month, will support all ATSC formats and operate as a modem in either DOCSIS or DAVIC environments. S-A hopes the device will be used for services such as Video-on-Demand (VOD) and t-commerce. It can send high-definition images to an HDTV while simultaneously downconverting the video to standard-definition NTSC output for a VCR. It includes a USB port for use with PCs.
The device "represents a powerful tool for cable operators because it will deliver a combination of key applications that satellite can't match - HD programming, on-demand video and DOCSIS - all in one device," said Michael P. Harney, S-A's corporate senior VP and president of the company's Subscriber Networks unit.
