LG's Becomes First Mobile DTV Receiver on the Market

CYBERSPACE: The first standalone Mobile DTV receiver is now commercially available. The LG DP570MH mobile TV is being offered by Amazon for a list price of $249.95 ($223.21 at checkout).

The DP570MH has a 7-inch QVGA display with 480 x 284 resolution, an integrated DVD player, stereo speakers and remote control. It measure 9-by-5-by-2 inches and weighs seven pounds.

Amazon is shipping only within the continental United States. Three other retailers are carrying the receiver--J&R, Video & Audio Center and Buy.com. Amazon said it first posted the item April 1, 2010, but a source familiar with the broadcast Mobile DTV initiative said it only recently started shipping.

Craig sells a similarly equipped, full ATSC resolution DTV/DVD combo for $99. Okay, viewers have to sit still to get a reliable picture, ruling out full ATSC for backseat auto viewing, but these sets are selling like hotcakes, and OTA broadcast TV is still free. If the industry tries to make mobile M/H a pay service, as some are suggesting, the audience will buy these full ATSC models instead, hurting the mobile M/W roll-out. That's one more reason why it is ESSENTIAL that mobile M/H stay a FREE, UNIVERSAL broadcast TV service. The other reason: pay mobile M/H would kill free, over the air broadcasting, destroying the only truly mass medium left in America.

This bare-bones article doesn't answer a basic question: Can this TV receive regular ATSC broadcasts, or only the (extremely rare) "Mobile DTV" signals? And where can we get a list of "Mobile TV" stations? Can regular DTV stations use one of their digital subchannels for "Mobile TV" subchannels?

We also have to make sure that the cellphone industry theieves (with FCC pushing and shoving) don't steal what's left of the UHF TV broadcast band for their PAY broadband services! If they want to BUY the low band - fine, if they want channels 5 & 6 for expanded FM migration by AM stations - fine, but touch TV channels 7-59: over my dead body!
