Infineon Technologies introduced a new single chip TV tuner IC that includes IF functions as well as RF (tuner) functions. Infineon said its Taifun TUA6039 offers lower power consumption and half the footprint of a conventional RF and IF devices. The tuner is constructed using a bi-polar CMOS process and is targeted at stationary broadcast receivers, where low cost and low power consumption are important.

Details on critical RF performance characteristics such as adjacent channel and taboo channel rejection were not disclosed by Infineon, the TUA6039 product page or the TUA6039 product brief.

Giuseppe Calarco, general manager of the tuner systems business unit at Infineon said, "The latest market-driven trends in developing digital television receivers are the competencies to reduce the footprint of the tuner module while delivering higher performance and lower power consumption at significantly reduced costs. The launch of the TUA6039 shows that Infineon is continuing to expand its expertise in analog and RF chip design and manufacturing to support its customers with strategic products for the TV tuner market."

Samples of the TUA6039 are available now, with volume production planned for Q3 2006. Infineon plans to offer a complete TV tuner reference design.
