The Federal Register re-launch is a boon to those of us who follow the technical activities of the Federal Communications Commission.

The register is still available in print, but thanks to new XML capabilities, the online version is now in an easier-to-read format at Data.gov, using the data catalogs on that site. The XML format makes it easier to transport data from a Web site and store it, manipulate it or customize it elsewhere.

The Federal Register is the official daily publication for rules, proposed rules and notices of federal agencies and organizations, as well as executive orders and other presidential documents. But up until now, it’s been difficult to navigate online.

Now, “You’re going to start seeing the Federal Register looking way better,” Carl Malamud, president of Public.Resource.Org, told the Washington Post. PRO works towards ensuring the online publication of public records.

Published by the Office of the Federal Register, part of the National Archives and Records Administration, the Federal Register is updated daily and is available Monday through Friday, except federal holidays. The publication went online in 1994.
