Walt Disney Studios, a longtime major backer of Blu-ray Disc, has posted a new movie trailer on its own Blu-ray-dedicated Web site for its computer-generated motion picture “Cars.” The title, a major box office success last summer, will feature several options only made possible by “blue ray” disc technology (which both HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc technically possess).

While Disney’s planned release date for “Cars” on Nov. 6 already had been announced, the new trailer indicates this will be the first popular Disney title to incorporate such advanced features, especially attached to a product that has wide appeal to a young audience, according to High-Def Digest.

Using BD-Java technology, the Disney disc will feature a “Car Finder” game that will allow users to search scenes within the movie to locate and identify more than 215 different types of vehicles. Frozen frames during viewing also can be used, with time limits, to identify other aspects of the film.

Another feature, which both next-gen disc technologies can offer but which has rarely been used until now, allows the director to appear in a picture-in-picture setting during the movie’s play-out to offer anecdotes of how and why certain scenes were shot. Disney is branding this PIP option “Cine-Explore.”
