Dish Drops Young Stations

Dish Network and Young Broadcasting have failed to hammer out a new retransmission agreement, so Young stations in 11 markets were dropped from the satellite provider’s lineup.

At WBAY-TV, the CBS affiliate in Green Bay, Wis., station management posted a “Dear Dish subscriber” letter.

“Dish’s contract with WBAY-TV expired on Dec. 10, 2008. For the past several months our company has attempted to reach a new agreement with Dish. Unfortunately Dish has elected not to accept our proposal,” and instead ran off with the spoon.

WBAY’s note went on to say that Dish charges its subscribers a fee for WBAY, so WBAY ought to get some love from Dish--a penny per subscriber “per day,” or about 30 cents a month, which is high to midland compared to what cable nets get in the way of subscriber fees. The station also casually mentioned DirecTV, Dish’s direct competition.

Young Broadcasting has stations in Lansing, Mich.; Lafayette, La.; Albany, N.Y.; Nashville, Tenn.; Knoxville, Tenn.; Green Bay, Wis.; Richmond, Va.; Davenport, Iowa; San Francisco; and Sioux Falls and Rapid City, S.D.
