Atlanta-based Crawford Media Management (CMM) has announced the completion of a large scale digitization project undertaken on behalf of the U.S. Army’s Signal Corps Visual Information Branch, which is located at Augusta, Ga. The operation involved the migration of nearly 2,000 programs that dated back to the 1960s.

Until early this year, this content existed on U-Matic, one-inch, Beta SP, D2 and DVCPRO tape formats. Some of the tape stock had started to deteriorate and it was feared that the recorded material could become inaccessible. CMM provided restoration as necessary for preserving and moving the footage to professional editing and Web proxy formats.

“This was a difficult project,” said Randy Herald, Fort Gordon’s Visual Information manager. “We were faced with losing 40 years of valuable recorded history. Crawford took the bull by the horns, sorted out the many problems and delivered files of excellent quality that were good to go.”

Content topics in the migrated and preserved tapes ranged from Signal Corp history to lessons learned from Desert Storm operations.
