Commercial Broadcasters Pledge to Raise $100 Million in Hurricane Relief Efforts
NAB said radio and TV stations will raise at least $100 million for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
The "Broadcast Unity for Katrina Relief" initiative includes a $1 million cash donation from NAB to the American Red Cross.
The NAB board approved the effort, which will involve stations donating airtime for fundraising appeals. In addition, the NAB has designated Friday, Sept. 9 as "Broadcast Unity Day," when station talent will block off times of day for fundraising relief efforts, telephone banks, radiothons and telethons.
"Broadcasters are a lifeline to communities in times of crisis, and Hurricane Katrina has touched America's soul like no natural disaster in our history," said NAB President/CEO Eddie Fritts. "I'm confident that local radio and television stations will exceed our $100 million target."
