San Francisco’s KDFC(FM) has turned on the digital juice. The Bonneville-owned classical station has been operating full time with analog/HD Radio signals since May 1. Previously it had been an Ibiquity test station for digital radio technology.
San Francisco is notorious for its multipath interference, caused by the hilly terrain disrupting the FM groundwaves. The HD Radio service largely eliminates this problem, according to Chuck Tweedle, Bonneville SVP. The improved audio quality of HD Radio will provide listeners with a “concert hall” experience, Tweedle said.
Bonneville’s other San Francisco FM stations, KOIT and KKDV, plan to begin full-time HD Radio transmissions within 60 days.
Also this month, the Cleveland market got its first HD Radio station, WNWV(FM), as reported earlier on RW Online.
