KLRN Switches to HD with Snell
KLRN has tapped Snell & Wilcox to help it move to HD.

The PBS station in San Antonio purchased the Kahuna multiformat SD/HD switcher as part of its planned progression into digital and HD broadcasting. In multiformat SD/HD mode, Kahuna users can mix SD camera feeds, graphics, handheld shots and archive footage directly into an HD production.

The station began the migration by upgrading to HD studio cameras, HDCAM players and recorders and HD-capable broadcast server. In the past year, KLRN upgraded its broadcast operations to include multicasting, with both SD service and an HD channel.

Now, the facility multicasts four streams of programming on digital channels; 9-1, the digital version of its channel 9 analog program service; 9-2, a combination of regular programming and HD in prime-time; 9-3, PBS Kids programming and 9-4, "The Learning Place" a schedule of programming for lifelong learners.

KLRN will use Kahuna as both a live production tool and for post-production, according to Snell & Wilcox.
