Public radio program distributor American Public Media announced its first broadcast in DTS Neural Surround sound.

American Public Media's daily classical music program "Performance Today" will broadcast concerts in 5.1 surround sound by DTS Neural from the Aspen Music Festival. The concerts air this week through Friday, Aug. 21.

Mark Seigle, DTS vice president business development, said the deal allows the company to bring surround sound to a nationwide audience.

Readers will recall that DTS acquired Neural Audio in a deal that closed Dec. 31, 2008 to gain DTS a stronger foothold in the broadcast and automotive markets. In January, the companies said DTS paid $7.5 million in cash for certain Neural assets and may pay up to $7.5 million more over the next five years if certain conditions are met.

NPR and some of its member stations such as KUVO(FM), Denver, have used the Neural surround technology, as has XM Satellite Radio.
