The federal government is providing $8.2 million to help restore full signal coverage for New York City radio and TV stations. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-NY, was instrumental in getting the funds from a larger emergency aid package earmarked for the stations.
A new tower to replace the one lost atop the World Trade Center will cost between $30 million to $40 million, according to The New York Times. Some local stations had back-up towers atop the Empire State Building. Those that didn't, or couldn't afford the rent on Empire are using a tower in Alpine, N.J.
Ten New York area stations will share the emergency aid.
