| Sony's new HXR-MC1 HD camcorder | |
Sony has just announced a new small-form factor high-definition camcorder product that stores images on 16 GB Memory Stick media. The HXR-MC1 measures a scant 1.5 x 1-11/16 x 3.5 inches and has full 1920x1080 resolution. It uses AVCHD (AVC/H.264 MPEG-4) compression technology to provide up to six hours of HD images on the 16 GB storage device.
"Video technology providers have recognized MPEG Long GOP as a professional standard," said Tatsuro Kurachi, group marketing manager for professional video at Sony Electronics. "Cost per recording minute of media is critical to professionals, and this extremely compact camera gives professional customers more mobility and flexibility in capturing broadcast-quality images in certain challenging and niche video applications."
He noted that video production units often use a mixture of both professional and consumer equipment to achieve their goals.
The tiny camera is provided with Sony's ClearVid CMOS sensor system, with Exmor technology enhancements that are used in Sony's professional line of camcorders. The design makes possible extremely low noise figures. The HXR-MC1 is fitted with a 10x optical system and also has a built-in microphone.
A separate wired control unit allows users to record or play back video, as well as zoom and change settings. The controller includes a 2.7-inch 16:9 LCD touchscreen display for monitoring and controlling the camera.
Sony says that the HXR-MC1 is expected to be available in February. Purchase price has not yet been set.
