You still have time to register for the Public Radio Engineering Conference that’s happening just before the Radio Show next week.

The “mini” one-day event is put together by the Association of Public Radio Engineers as well as NPR Labs, which is now a unit of NPR Distribution. It will be held Tuesday, Sept. 28 at NPR headquarters in Washington.

Topics up for discussion include studies from NPR Labs, including unveiling the Personal Audio Information System prototype radio, an FM IBOC asymmetrical sideband study and other projects.

The idea behind PAIS is to help visually impaired listeners hear their radio reading service when and where they want to. I began writing about PAIS in 2007, so it will be nice to see the prototype unit.

Some of what NPR Distribution has in store for attendees are tours of the new ContentDepot test facility and the PRSS Network Operations Center, as well as an overview of the technical facility planning for the new NPR headquarters.

The event is free to public radio engineers, but the host — Public Radio Satellite System, managed by NPR Distribution — asks that you RSVP (by e-mailing WFAE Director of Engineering/IT Jobie Sprinkle) no later than Friday so that NPR has an accurate head count.
