WRAL-TV Now Using Guardian Weather Radar

09.28.2007

WRAL-TV has recently inaugurated the first Guardian weather radar system in the Mid-Atlantic region. The new system from Baron Services provides the station with enhanced identification of precipitation types, as well as offering a 256-level color palate and high resolution imaging. It uses high microwave power levels and dual-polarization technology.

“Our station has always embraced new technology,” said Greg Fishel, chief meteorologist at WRAL-TV. “So, going with dual-pol was a natural thing for us.

Now we’ll be able to show types of precipitation, instead of just intensities—obviously a brand-new and very useful advantage. Baron has provided us with cutting edge technology for over 10 years now, and this is just the latest example.”

WRAL-TV is the fifth television station in the United States to implement the new Guardian radar system. Dual-polarization weather radar was developed in 2004 as part of joint effort between Baron Services, television station WHNT-TV in Huntsville, Ala. and the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
